This now abandoned castle did however fight a different type of enemy. Surprisingly this fort never saw battle, and was used to store ammunition in it’s early life. This now abandoned castle was constructed in 1838 to serve as a strategic armament against attacks from the Baltic waterway. In the Golf Of Finland an ominous looking fort rises above the water. The fort has been left abandoned since the mid 1800s. Ten or so years later the fort was restored and also served as a makeshift prison.Īs piracy declined and the steamboat became more popular, the usefulness of Fort San Lorenzo began to dwindle. Mr Morgan was long from a proper ‘sir’ and was notorious for pillaging settlements and wiping out villages along the nearby islands. The fort was completed in 1601, but only 69 years later (nice) it was destroyed by Sir Henry Morgan. King Phillip II knew this, and ordered the fort to be constructed to ward off the increasing number of pirates that were attacking nearby ships. Back in the 1500s you couldn’t just get next day delivery on all of your gold and spices, so having a well protected trade route was key to growing any empire. Sitting quietly on the mouth of the Chagres River in Panama is Fort San Lorenzo. Today only a few lone walls and a large stone foundation are left of this once grandiose castle. No one is sure exactly who burned it down, but historians theorize that it was either looting townspeople, or possibly Nobunaga’s own son. A few weeks later the castle was set on fire. In the summer of 1582, Nobunaga died and the castle was captured by Akechi Mitsuhide, who had betrayed him years earlier. ![]() Here Nobunaga could keep his generals and soldiers safe. Vladimir Nikolayev was featured in the National Geographic documentary " Russia's Toughest Prisons". In 2001 he was transferred to IK-6 Black Dolphin Prison. He has stated that while he is generally against the idea of the death penalty, he would prefer it for himself, rather than continuing to live in prison for the duration of his life. In 1999, by presidential decree, the death penalty was suspended, being replaced by life imprisonment. In 1997 Vladimir Nikolayev was convicted under articles 105, 152, 162 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Investigators searched his apartment, where they found human remains and a heavily blood stained bathtub. Vladimir Nikolayev was arrested and confessed shortly thereafter. Upon analysis the meat was found to contain human blood. The ruse was at last discovered when some people who ate the product Nikolayev procured as " Saiga trimmings" became suspicious of the taste and submitted it to a doctor. He used the money from this venture to buy alcohol. Nikolayev distributed the flesh to acquaintances, and even went so far as to sell five kilograms (eleven pounds) at an open market, telling buyers that it was kangaroo meat. Finding the results of this culinary experiment satisfactory, he continued utilizing flesh from his victims as food. ![]() He stated that he had originally intended only to bury it.ĭuring this first dismemberment Nikolayev removed a portion of flesh from the victim's thigh, which he roasted. Nikolaev has stated via later interview that it was not originally his intent to cannibalize his victims, but rather the idea occurred to him spontaneously while dismembering the first body. When he realized that the man was dead he dismembered his body in the bathtub. He then carried the victim upstairs to his apartment and attempted to revive him with cold water. On his own account, the first murder happened "accidentally" when Nikolayev killed a drinking companion, (who also had a criminal history) during a fist fight. ![]() Prior to his murder convictions, Nikolayev had a long criminal history, first being convicted for theft and robbery in 1980. Nikolayev is best known for the cannibalism of his victims, and of distributing and selling their flesh to others in disguise of exotic animal meat. ![]() Vladimir Nikolayevich Nikolayev (Russian: Влади́мир Никола́евич Никола́ев) (born March 16, 1959) is a Russian murderer from Novocheboksarsk.
